Rare – Colnago Mexico Model

27 Dec
Tumblr_ldwtlpya4h1qzt4vjo1_r2_
I wonder how many of you received this wonderful model in your Christmas stocking? Well, I’m not surprised if you didn’t, they are extremely rare now and go for quite a sum on Ebay. Some of you may even remember making them up some years ago. It was brought out to commemorate Saronni’s victory in 1982 on his Colnago Mexico. It really is a nice model set, especially if you are fortunate to have one in mint condition. They are highly collectable and are sought out by Colnago enthusiasts world-wide!

Colnago Family

Ernesto Colnago and the Colnago family hosted a pre-Christmas mass at the Italian framebuilder’s Cambiago factory on the final Saturday before Christmas. The mass was led by Don Antonio Mazzi, who is renowned in Italy for his work with drug addicts.

Among those assisting Don Mazzi were Don Gianni Nava, who raced against Beppe Saronni as a junior before taking up holy orders, and Fr William Ortiz, a Colombian priest and former team-mate of Nelson “Cacaito” Rodríguez, one of Colombia’s great climbers of the 1990s.

As well as the Colnago family, the mass was attended by many of the great and good of Italian cycling and sport. One of the guests of honour was Italian cycling legend Fiorenzo Magni, who recently celebrated his 90th birthday, as well as fellow Giro d’Italia winners Saronni, Felice Gimondi, Gianni Motta and Gianni Bugno. Also present were Italian football legend Giovanni Trappatoni, Mapei boss Giorgio Squinzi and RAI sports reporter Marino Bartoletti.

During the mass, Don Mazzi thanked Ernesto Colnago for his support in helping to get a new bike-related project off the ground in Honduras.

La Storia di Ernesto Colnago – Quanndo la bici e’ arte (When the bike is art) is a real gem to find for any lover of Colnago. This book occasionally pops up on ebay UK, but is more often found on ebay Italy.

This book was written by journalist Rino Negri , published by Landoni in 1985. It is one of the rare books, “if not the only” officially that tells the story of the brilliant builder Ernesto Colnago , which helped to improve and spread the most popular means of transport created by man, “the bicycle“. It consists of 216 pages, to which add historical photos linking the famous manufacturer to some of the most celebrated cycling champions who have contributed, along with colnago , to write the history of world cycling. There are also tables with geometry of the original techniques used and numerous photographs of various historical models. Real works of art produced by Colnago racing
This book is now a collectors items, but you may be fortunate to find it! For the lovers of the big ‘C’……….good hunting!

Colnago Flight – Wind Tunnel Session

19 Dec

Some great shots of the Team Type 1 Colnago flight’s (time trial bike) in the wind-tunnel during research and development sessions.  This enables the team coach to assess valuable video and data information on the riders performance during the session. Four electric fans power can generate air flow of up to 85 mph. The Team riders rode in a 30 mph wind. This event took place in the wind tunnel in Mooresville, North Carolina.

The Colnago Flight is used with impressive results by Team Type 1 at the Tour of California and by Bbox Bouygues Telecom’s Pierrick Fédrigo in winning the 2010 Criterium International, the Flight extends Colnago’s long tradition of drag-defying frames that guarantee pure speed. Designed using advanced computational fluid dynamics techniques, the Flight is the fastest bicycle Colnago have ever produced.

Wind-tunnel tested to maximise its aerodynamic qualities, the Flight’s beta carbon monocoque frame offers a silky smooth ride, with surefire Colnago handling that provides zip through corners. Internal cable routing ensures that drag is reduced to a minimum.
