Colnago Fireflies

3 Feb

Colnago Con Brio would like to thank Nick Hussey of Vulpine.CC  for sending in these great pictures and informing us about this unique and special event!

The Fireflies Tour was first ridden in 2000 by a small group of friends including Ridley Scott’s sons, who had all been touched by Leukaemia. Last year was the 10th anniversary and there were 70 riders. In 2010 they raised £250,000 riding across the hardest Tour de France climbs in the Alps. Since then, the amount now raised is well over £1000,000.

Many of the riders have never ridden a road bike, or even done more than a shopping trip. They start training around now and ride in mid-June, Geneva to Cannes. There is a real feeling of camaraderie, borne out of the shared suffering of the sheer distance, altitude and weather day after day. Last year, they climbed the Izoard in a -15c blizzard and had to be pulled off the mountain as the army closed the descent.

Unfortunately, I was unable to ride, so I wanted to help out in another way and jumped in to help. Chris Haworth, one of the original riders and the instigator, had arranged for Colnago bicycles to be made for Leuka, the charity that Fireflies helps. Ernesto Colnago approved of the aims and oversaw the project. The unique designs were created by Fireflies and Colnago working in partnership. We decided to create a custom EPS and a Master-X. In the end, we also managed a Colnago Pista frame! Windwave the UK agent for Colnago were extremely helpful and delivered the bikes in may, kitted out with Campagnolo and FSA components.

The bikes for Fireflies were subsidised and a donation was given to Leuka. Then, more were sold to the Public (especially the collectors) at the full price with all profits going to Leuka! This year, they are looking at doing a Colnago C59 Italia which looks absolutely gorgeous. The designs are just about complete. Considering I’ve always wanted a Colnago since a child, this was a dream come true!
